Apogee AD/DA-16X
アポジーのコンバーターを使ってみました。業務用機の定番でレコーディングスタジオや劇場、放送関係など多くの実績があるようです。使い勝手がよく動作も安定していて、全周波数レンジにわたって芯のある豊かな音質です。
セッティング途中の写真です。コンバーター選定のため様々な機種を試してみました。上からDENON AVP-A1HD, 自作ラックにはAD-16X, RME Fireface400, DA-16X, Lynx AURORA16, MUTEC iCLOCK, dbx DriveRack4800がみえます。LynxとApogeeに絞って比較視聴していた時期のものです。
AD-16Xの背面インターフェースです。上は左側で、入力部があります。全16チャンネルのアナログバランス入力が可能です。コネクタはDsub25で、ブレイクアウトケーブルを繋ぎます。下は右側でオプションカードスロットとトスリンクを備えています。ADATとSMUXプロトコル互換です。AESの出力コネクターもDsub25になっています。右端はワードクロック入出力BNC端子です。プロオーディオデバイスはフロントよりむしろリアパネルで仕様と機能が良くわかります。
DA-16XはAD-16Xの鏡像のような構成です。入力部はDsubのAESとトスリンク、出力は2つのバランスDsubです。
ブレイクアウトケーブルです。キャノン部のオスメスが違うバージョンがあり、それぞれ入出力用です。自作もしてみましたが、半田付けが大事です。

DA-16Xのボンネットを開けた様子です。右上が電源部で基盤は余裕のあるシンプルな構成です。判り難いですが、下中央にセットしたfirewireカード見えます。
ホームシアターの中でどういう機能を持たせているかを示したのが上の図です。Apogeeはデジタルチャンネルデバイダー(dbx DriveRack4800)の入出力インターフェースとして使っています。スピーカーが3ウエイマルチアンプ仕様としているので、チャンネルデバイダーは必須です。dbx DriveRack4800にもコンバーターは備わっていて、音質も悪くはありませんが、より品質を高めるため外部コンバーターを使っています。dbxはデジタル処理部だけ機能させている事になります。PCで再生するステレオ音源としてRME HDSP9632のようなバランス出力を持ったカードからの入力も可能です。RME HDSP9632の場合はAES出力も持っているので、その場合は直接dbxのデジタル入力に接続します。フルデジタル処理の良質のステレオ再生が聴けます。
実際に動作させている様子です。デジタル表示は動作クロックで両者MUTECからのワードクロックでスレーブにしています。
冒頭にも書きましたが、音の芯がしっかりしていて、暖かな音質です。高域は綺麗で華やかです。業界のスタンダードとして輝く文句の無いパフォーマンスです。多チャンネルを同時処理できるコンバーターは数が多くありませんが、他に素晴らしい音質で驚いたものにプリズムがあります。(関連記事Lynx Studio Technology AURORA16のレビュー記事はこちら）
